The University of Arizona has awarded Linda McCartney a posthumous honorary doctorate in Fine Arts as part of their 2023 Commencement.

Linda studied art history at the university from 1961-1964 and often talked about how her time there inspired her career as a professional photographer. In particular, Linda was greatly influenced by the photography lessons she took at the university under the instruction of celebrated photographer Hazel Larsen Archer. In February 2023, the Linda McCartney Retrospective exhibition made its North American debut at the university’s Center for Creative Photography.

We and the family are super proud that Linda is getting this award from the University of Arizona, as she loved her time there and loved her time in Arizona. Doctor of Fine Arts exactly sums her up. She was a doctor. She was a fine artist. So an honorary doctorate is wonderful, and it’s great that her photography and her career is being recognised.

The University of Arizona said, ‘Linda McCartney distinguished herself through her exceptional and inspirational career as a photographer, and she continues to have an enduring impact around the world’.

The Linda McCartney Retrospective is on at the University of Arizona’s Center for Creative Photography until 5th August 2023 and is free to visit. Find out more here.
